MOBERLY, Mo. (KMIZ)

After canceling classes on Wednesday, Moberly Public Schools says it plans to be in session on Thursday and will utilize snow routes for buses.

Wednesday marked the sixth day of school in Moberly impacted by weather this year.

District spokeswoman Cristina Wright told ABC 17 News in January that Moberly Public Schools has reserved dates within the school calendar as makeup days if it exceeds its five allotted days for alternative methods of instruction. Wright added while the district prefers in-person learning, it wants to use up the AMI days because reclaiming days that were initially marked as “off” and adding school days to the end of the year result in “very low attendance.”

However, due to forecasted freezing rain earlier in the month, Moberly Public Schools used its fifth AMI days then. Since the district used up all of its allotted AMI days, Wednesday’s snow day will be made up on Thursday, May 22.

Other impacts in the city

The City of Moberly announced on its social media that trash pickups for Wednesday have been moved to Thursday, because of the weather.

Snow rolled through Mid-Missouri on Wednesday and a number of area schools had called off classes. Thursday’s regularly scheduled trash pickup will still occur that day, the city wrote.

"If trash is not picked up on your scheduled day, please leave it for the next day," the city said in the post.

Some areas of Mid-Missouri were expected to get as many as 7 inches of snow, but the snow totals ended up being fewer than expected. Road conditions were good on most streets on Wednesday afternoon.

“Storms like these can be notoriously unpredictable and we’ve seen systems like this before,” city spokesman Scott McGarvey said in a statement. “Our public works teams prepare for the forecasted scenario and then adjust accordingly. Because we didn’t see the heavy snow expected, our crews were able to clear it quickly.”

The Moberly Police Department wrote on its social media earlier in the day that it had responded to "numerous crashes."

"Moberly Police Department, MSHP, and Randolph County Sheriff officers have responded to numerous accidents and vehicle slide-offs, with more calls for service pending," a 10:30 a.m. post on MPD's Facebook page says. "As the snow continues to fall and temperatures drop road conditions will continue to deteriorate. Use extreme caution if you have to travel."
