Kehoe orders flags in Howard County, firehouses statewide to fly at half-staff in honor of firefighter who died from 9/11-related cancer

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Gov. Mike Kehoe ordered U.S. and Missouri flags to by flown at half-staff at firehouses statewide and government buildings in Howard County on Sunday in honor of firefighter Larry Roland Duncan.

Flags will also be flown at half-staff at the firefighters memorial in Kingdom City. Duncan died on Wednesday, Jan. 15 from a cancer related to toxic materials first-responders were exposed to after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York City.

Duncan served in Missouri Task Force 1  as a heavy rigging specialist during the 9/11 response and was a part of the team that spent 10 days looking for survivors in the rubble, the Boone County Fire Protection District wrote last week.

He served with Task Force 1 from 1998-2003 and had also served as a member of the Cooper County Fire Protect District, Boone County Fire Protection District and Howard County Fire Protection District.

“Larry Roland Duncan dedicated 23 years of his life to the fire service and answering the call no matter the emergency, including responding to Ground Zero as a member of Missouri Task Force 1,” Kehoe said in Friday’s press release. “At the New York City site where the Twin Towers once stood, Firefighter Duncan and his Task Force 1 colleagues spent days exposed to toxic contaminants as they scoured the rubble looking for survivors of the terrorist attack. We honor his relentless commitment to serving others, regardless of the risk to himself.”

Duncan’s obituary says that a funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at the New Franklin High School gymnasium. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. A burial will follow at Old Lamine Cemetery.
