Fire forces evacuation of inmates at northwest Missouri jail

MARYVILLE, Mo. (AP) — A fire in an inmate's cell in a northwest Missouri jail forced authorities to evacuate all inmates through narrow, smoke-filled hallways.

No one was injured in the fire Thursday night at the Nodaway County Jail in Maryville, while will be closed indefinitely.

Sheriff Randy Strong said about 20 inmates are being housed in Buchanan and Andrew county jails.

He said only one inmate was in the cell when the fire started.

It was extinguished quickly but black smoke filled the building.

Strong called the fire suspicious but said the state fire marshal will investigate the cause.
