St. Louis city and county police say officers were hit by gunfire and involved in shootings after protests Monday.

Protesters were seen smashing windows and stealing items from businesses as fires burned in the downtown area.

Police tweeted early Tuesday that the officers were taken to an area hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. It was unclear who had fired the shots.

The St. Louis County Police Department tweeted about another officer-involved shooting hours after the shootings downtown. Police say one suspect fired at city officers and headed into a city northwest of downtown.

County police said a shooting suspect was "wounded and transported to an area hospital for life-saving treatment," and another was arrested. It's unclear if the shooting is linked to the shootings in downtown St. Louis.

Protests continued Monday in Missouri over the death of George Floyd and police treatment of African Americans, with gatherings also held in Kansas City, Columbia and Jefferson City.
