MEXICO, Mo. (KMIZ)

Mexico officers are warning residents about a new scam tricking friends and family members that a loved one has been kidnapped.

A release sent out Wednesday morning from Mexico Public Safety Department Major Brice Mesko said at least 12 residents have received calls about the scam.

The release said the caller will say a friend or family member has been kidnapped after a car crash or witnessing a drug deal. People can be heard yelling or screaming in the background of the call.

The caller then convinces residents to send money as part of a ransom, Mesko said.

Officers said these calls are scams and residents are asked not to send money.

Mesko said if someone calls about a loved one's wellbeing "you can either call that person yourself or contact Mexico Public Safety." He added the public safety department will check on people if needed.

The department's phone number is 573-581-2100.
