Fire reported at Saline County Jail, inmates moved to other county jails

MARSHALL, Mo. (KMIZ)

A fire was reported Tuesday morning at the Saline County Jail, according to a press release from the Saline County Sheriff’s Office.

The fie was discovered at 10:45 a.m., the release states. Inmates were evacuated and the fire was extinguished by the Marshall Fire Department. The release states that the cause of the fire is under investigation and no injuries were reported, but one corrections officer was evaluated by medical personnel.

The release states some inmates volunteered to help with clean-up, while others were moved to other county jails.

Saline County Sheriff Cindi Mullins said one unit of the jail was impacted and there were 54 inmates at the jail when the fire started. Mullins said it could take a few days for the rest of the jail to get back to normal.

Pettis County Sheriff Brad Anders said Pettis County is housing 17 inmates from Saline County, while Howard County Sheriff Jeff Oswaled said his county his housing four Saline inmates. Cooper County Sheriff Chris Cass confirmed his office his helping as well, but did not say how many Saline inmates were being housed.

The release also thanked the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office, Marshall Police Department, Marshall Fire Department and Saline County Ambulance.
