Jonesburg residents recount scrap metal fire

JONESBURG, Mo. (KMIZ)

Residents recount how a Scrap Mart Metal Friday morning caused several residents to shelter in place.

Jonesburg Elementary School and multiple neighborhoods are just two miles east of where the fire occurred. Most residents were at work when the fire was happening. However, Kenneth Shaw was home when he saw multiple fire trucks driving down his road.

"Actually, my wife works in Montgomery City schools. She was heading out, and I noticed a lot of fire equipment going past," Shaw said. "I guess they had 20 fire departments responding. We didn't see any smoke at the time."

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, exposure to fire debris may cause reduction in lung function and pulmonary inflammation. To learn more on how to protect yourself from fires click here.

"Not at the time the wind was actually blowing south. So a lot of people were told if the smoke came, to shelter in place. But all in all, I mean, we didn't see any smoke here in our area, even though it's two miles down the road," Shaw said.

The last major fire in Jonesburg was in early February this year. The fire was called to issue at 1:48 p.m., and Jonesburg Highhill Fire Protection District arrived at 2:06 p.m., and was contained by 3:21 p.m. The fire was reported as a C-burn class, meaning it was caused by electrical failure from appliances, electronic equipment, or wiring. The fire destroyed 20 acres of land.

There is no official report about the damages of Friday's fire that states total damages or official cause.
