Final court hearing in Columbia murder case centers on abuse allegations

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

On Friday, The State of Missouri filed a motion against a man accused of murdering his wife back in 2006.

Keith A. Comfort appeared at the Boone County Court House at 8:00 a.m. for a final court hearing before his murder trial begins next week.

Comfort told police when he arrived at his apartment in the 1700 Block of Amelia Street back in 2006 claims his wife Megan N. Shultz was frantic and swinging her arms at him. Comfort claims he received a call from his wife saying she had done a narcotics transaction and “ripped someone off,” according to court documents.

Comfort reportedly told police he strangled Shultz and put her body in the dumpster, after realizing she was no longer breathing.

"The most horrifying thing is hearing he put her in trash bags and dumped her in a landfill," Debra Shultz, Megan's mother said. "Just treating her like garbage was the most horrifying thing you could say to a mother."

During the police investigation, some people offered opinions about Schultz's behavior, which prompted the motion from prosecutors.

The motion in "lemine" would block witnesses from talking about any possible violence or acts of aggression that might have been made by Schultz unless they were directed at Comfort and seen by that witness.

"All of this turmoil destroyed my parents when Megan disappeared," Debra said. "She was their first born grandchild. I continued to search for Keith who was traveling all around the U.S. and Alaska, having a ball, having a life."

"This man dismantled and destroyed my family," Debra said.

Comfort's trial is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. this Monday. Jury selection will begin that morning. 85 to 90 panel members will be seated and the jury will be selected from that group.
