Mid-Missouri law enforcement agencies to host prescription drug take back events

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Several law enforcement agencies in Mid-Missouri will join the Drug Enforcement Administration as it hosts its 23rd National Prescription Drug Take Back Day Saturday.

People will be able to drop off their unwanted medications at several locations starting at 10 a.m.
According to experts, a person should never flush their medications down a drain as that method can harm the water supply.

A 2018 article, from the United States Geological Survey, there has been a growing concern for pharmaceuticals getting into the water supply.

Boone County Drop Off Locations: 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Hickman Sr. High School 1104 N Providence Rd, Columbia, MO

Hallsville Police Department 202 Highway 124 East, Hallsville, MO

Centralia Police Department 114 S Rollins, Centralia, MO

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates in the United States, 100,000 people died as the result of a drug poisoning in 2021.

Sam's Health Mart at 530 US-24, Moberly, MO

Law enforcement sayS, the event free and anonymous for everyone.

Medications allowed for drop offs are tablets, capsules, patches, and other forms of prescription drugs.

Collection sites will not accept syringes, sharps, or illicit drugs. 

According to law enforcement, at its last take back in April, the DEA hit a record-high with the public turning in over 700,00 pounds of unwanted medications.
