New DBRL union begins negotiations with administration

KMIZ

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Daniel Boone Regional Library Workers United (DBRLWU) met with the DBRL administration Monday.

The DBRLWU sent its list of demands to the administration on Sept. 29. Workers approved to unionize in May.

The two sides agreed to terms for the contract negotiations and discussed the list of demands on Monday. The actual negotiations will start at an Oct. 14 meeting. The length of the bargaining process is unknown, Daniel Boone Regional Library said in a press release.

“We want the outcome of this process to be as fair to the staff and to the taxpayer as possible,” DBRL Executive Director Margaret Conroy said in the release. “We want to address the staff’s concerns while also being mindful of our budget that is 95% funded through property taxes. We anticipate needing to make adjustments to how we allocate our funds, but it is too early to know how the contract will affect budget allocations.”

Among its list of demands, the DBRLWU has included:

  • The DBRLWU be recognized as the sole bargaining representative for all employees except managerial, supervisory, confidential, temporary, emergency and provisional.
  • Updates to the DBRL's non-discrimination and sexual harassment policies.
  • A wage scale providing yearly raises and shift differentials.
  • Increased paid time off.
  • Adjustments to the holiday leave system.
  • Adjustments to benefits, including health insurance and 401(k)
  • And more.

The DBRLWU also proposed this contract should last three years.
