Sunrise Beach Fire Chief petitions court to fill board position

SUNRISE BEACH, Mo. (KMIZ)

Sunrise Beach Fire Protection District Fire Chief Joseph LaPlant has petitioned the Circuit Court of Camden County to fill a vacant board position that the Sunrise Beach Fire Protection District board hasn't filled since June of this year.

According to a press release, Board Director Brian Layman resigned from the Board in June 2020 due to his moving out of the District.

The board is then required to fill the seat for the remainder of the term until April 2022 under Missouri State Statute RsMO 321.200.

In the release, Chief LaPlant laid out how the remaining board members were creating issues by not showing up to meetings and thus making the meeting "no quorum."

One member asked the board to accommodate his request but the other member would not allow for meetings to be moved back an hour. Because of this, the member said he would not show up for any more meetings.

Because the meetings were being called "no quorum," Chief LaPlant could not submit his 2021 budget request to replace aging gear and purchase new equipment.

Chief LaPlant says in the release "that it is in the best interest of the people the District serves to bring this matter before the court and have these issues resolved in the interest of public safety."
