JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Jefferson City Council approved a contract this week that will allow the city to move forward with its plans for a riverfront market.

This project will include a new pavilion and market along the Missouri River, located off Chestnut Street on the old Missouri State Penitentiary property.

"This project is part of a larger initiative to revitalize our historic 200-year-old riverfront, bringing renewed vibrancy and opportunities to the area," the city's website says.

On Monday, the city signed a contract with Bartlett and West to begin the design process.

The contract shows the overall project will cost $4.2 million, including demolition, site preparation, fencing and the structure itself.

Neighborhood Services Supervisor Rachel Senzee said $2.1 million of the project is being funded by the Community Revitalization Grant.

The city's website states its intent for the market is to serve as a hub for community events and activities. It will have open-air seating, picnic areas and an event space to accommodate different activities.

Monday's contract states Bartlett and West is expected to have construction bid documents completed by March 15, 2025, to allow the city to bid for a general contractor.

The contract signed Monday also includes design for the Chestnut Street Improvement Project.
