Jefferson City hires St. Louis contractor to clean yard waste site

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Jefferson City this week hired a contractor to clean up its yard waste site.

Contractors from St. Louis forestry disposal company AgriCycle have been working with Jefferson City since Tuesday, according to city documents.

The waste site is free to Jefferson City residents during daylight hours and accepts yard waste like tree limbs, grass clippings and wood chips.

"There's a lot of independent contractors around Jeff City, that dump here and a lot of residents that dump here," said Travis Adamson, who is the owner of T & T Lawn Care. "It's just nonstop through here, probably get a good 10-to-15 vehicles an hour all day long, every day.

According to the city's contracts with AgriCycle, the company plans to grind and haul off brush, yard waste and wood waste from the site. Waste will be hauled and processed in Fulton, in a partnership with Fulton company, Blue Bird Composting. The total cost of AgriCycle's clean up services will not exceed $50,000.

This decision to pick the disposal site's cleanup contractor was a months long process of contract and proposal reviews with AgriCycle officially signing a couple weeks ago.

AgriCycle's parent company, St. Louis Composting, recycles the wood waste from AgriCycle's contracts and turns it into usable mulch.

According to Britt Smith, Jefferson City's Public Works operations division director, this method of disposal was a feature that stood out compared to other companies who bid for a contract.

"They had a very extensive experience in doing this type of work, and they had an environmentally responsible way of disposing of the material," Smith said. "We wanted to ensure that that this wasn't going someplace where it wasn't supposed to be."

Agriculture will be visiting the site around four to five times a year. However, Jefferson City Public works have a team that visits the site every morning during the work week to help manage the scene.
