JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

A 20-year-old Jefferson City man was arrested and charged on Monday after he was accused of killing a man in a crash.

Diego Popp was charged with second-degree involuntary manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident and misdemeanor reckless driving. He is being held at the Cole County Jail without bond. A court date has not been scheduled.

The victim was John Brummit. He was 50.

According to the probable cause statement, at 11:16 p.m. Sunday, Popp was driving on Highway 50 West when he failed to stay within the lane he was driving in and hit the victim, who was riding a bicycle on the shoulder of the highway.

Popp then sped off, the statement says. Brummit was found dead in the shoulder of the highway at 6:23 a.m. Monday, the statement says. Parts of Popp’s vehicle was found at the crash site, the statement says.

Popp allegedly admitted to police that he was at the same location when the crash occurred and claimed to have been intoxicated, court documents say. He allegedly saw officers working the scene while he was on his way to work and claimed he didn’t stop because he didn’t want to “get in trouble for being drunk,” the statement says.
