Jefferson City resident rescued after early morning fire

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

One person is reported to be recovering after an apartment fire in Jefferson City early Friday morning.

According to a press release from the Jefferson City Fire Department, firefighters were dispatched around 1:50 a.m. for a report of a fire at an apartment building in the 900 block of Jackson St.

When crews arrived they saw fire from the second-story window of a multi-family residence.

While firefighters were searching the building, one victim was found and rescued from the second floor. The victim was found in life-threatening condition, with "strong suspicion of cyanide poisoning secondary to smoke inhalation," according to the release.

The agency said Cole County EMS on the scene used a CyanoKit and Advanced Life Support procedures to treat the victim. The victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries but was reported in stable condition as of Friday morning.

No other injuries were reported and four residents were displaced. The Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents, according to the release.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but the Jefferson City Fire Department said the fire appears to have started on the second floor.

Jefferson City Fire responded with 5 apparatus and three chief officers, assisted by two medic units and one chief officer from Cole County EMS, the Missouri State Fire Marshal’s office, and the Jefferson City Police Department.
