Jefferson City Fire Department practices ice rescues while cold weather enters Mid-Missouri
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
Practice makes perfect, and over the next few days, Jefferson City residents may see the city’s fire department practice ice rescues.
The training is taking place at McKay Lake and the department stated Thursday on its social media that it would be testing out a thermal imaging camera that can take black-and-white photographs that can show water temperature.
Corey Sapp, with JCFD, said if somebody does fall through the ice, it's important to stay calm and call first responders. He recommends that you should not jump in after them.
“People can't physically operate in the water whenever they get cold,” Sapp said. “It's not about the will to want to do that. Their body just simply won't let them because of muscle cramps and other things that are within that water.”
