One person dies from car crash involving pedestrian in Jefferson City

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Jefferson City Police Department is investigating a deadly crash involving a pedestrian Sunday afternoon.

Police responded to the 200 block of Madison Street just after noon. One person was taken to a local hospital and died from their injuries there.

Our news crew walked the area asking businesses in the area if they had seen or heard any information.

One employee at Sweet Smoke Barbecue said police officers had the area of Madison St. blocked off around the time of the crash.

Jefferson City Police will not share any more details on the crash at this time.

A traffic alert was sent out for another crash causing Highway 54 at United to be backed up just before 3 p.m.

According to the Save Mo Lives website, each year over 100 pedestrians, bicyclists or other non-motorized road users are killed in traffic incidents. The leading causes of those being due to speeding, distractions and impaired driving

So far this year there have been 56 fatal traffic incidents involving pedestrians according to the Missouri Statewide Traffic Accident Records.

ABC 17 News has reached out to Jefferson City Police Department for more information and further clarification on the crash. They have not responded yet.
