Jefferson City residents want answers on deadly shooting

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Jefferson City residents are left with questions after a deadly shooting Saturday afternoon.

The death of a 27-year-old Jefferson City resident is under investigation by the Jefferson City Police Department.

A news release from the department said officers responded to a disturbance call of shots fired near Broadway and Atchison Streets Saturday afternoon. Officers found the victim with gunshot wounds and said they could not revive the victim.

The release added a suspect was later found near the scene and taken into custody. The identities of the victim and suspect aren’t being released by the department at this time.

Daryl Struempf heard the shots and called it into the police.

"Yesterday during the day we heard shots fired and we were like oh my goodness that's close so we called it in and then we came out to look and it ended up being our neighbors, and it's been quite a shock for us because we've grown to love them," Struempf said.

Tonia Etgeton was shocked by the shooting and the large scene on her street.

"It was just very surreal," Etgeton said. "It's not something you expect to see in your community or on your street or on your block and definitely not something you ever want your children to witness."

Etgeton said she was concerned with the attention other residents were giving the police investigation.

"This was somebody's son, somebody's brother, somebody's friend, somebody's dad possibly, and I felt like he was just being displayed and that was that was tragic," Etgeton said.

Struempf has a lot questions still unanswered.

"There's just so many confusing factors that took place yesterday that we're waiting to hear what really happened, what's the behind story, what built up to this," Struempf said.
