Basement fire damages Jefferson City home

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

An appliance fire damaged a basement in Jefferson City on Friday.

Firefighters were sent to the 400 block of Atchison Street at 4 p.m., where heavy black smoke was coming from the smoke and basement of a small house, the Jefferson City Fire Department said in a news release. The person living there was already outside when firefighters arrived and was not injured.

The fire was put out quickly and firefighters rescued two pets from the upper story, the department said. The animals were unhurt.

The fire stated with a malfunctioning appliance. The basement sustained fire damage and the whole house had smoke damage, the fire department said. The American Red Cross is helping the person who lives there.
