Fire at Jefferson City Probation and Parole Office causes major damage

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo (KMIZ)

An early morning fire Thursday at the Missouri Probation and Parole Office in Jefferson City caused serious damage to the building.

Crews were dispatched to the fire in the 2700 block of West Main Street around 3:35 a.m. for a burglar alarm sounding, according to the Jefferson City Fire Department. Firefighters that arrived at the scene reported heavy fire in the rear of the building.

Crews reported the fire was no longer active just after 5:45 a.m. But a news release said they remained on scene until about 8:30 a.m. No one was hurt.

The department called the building a "total loss." Another building near the fire sustained minor heat damage to its exterior, the fire department said.

The Missouri State Fire Marshal's Office is expected to help crews investigate the cause of the fire. Police are also part of the investigation.

The Missouri Department of Corrections, which operates the building, said 23 people work there and some staff have been moved to the Probation and Parole central office.
