Smith told ABC 17 News that workers removed material from the roof of the structure to expose the support beams.
The Jefferson City Council approved $186,000 to pay for the demolition. The city will own the property at 200 E. High St. after the building is removed.
Crews blocked off parts of High Street and Madison Street near the demolition site. The total project could last up to three to four weeks.
