Demolition permit issued for Jefferson City airport terminal
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
The paperwork is finalized for the demolition of the Jefferson City Memorial Airport terminal to get underway.
The Jefferson City Department of Planning and Protective Services issued a non-residential demolition permit Friday to Stan Morris Construction company of Kennett, Missouri.
The company's contract with the city includes $24,000 for the building's demolition and asbestos abatement.
The decision to have the 1960s era building demolished came after it sustained heavy damage in the 2019 flooding of the Missouri River.
According to the State Emergency Management Agency floodplain regulation, any damage, repair or renovations must be performed so that the structure would be prepared for future flooding events.
Those regulations meant that demolition was the more economical option, Jefferson City Public Works Operations Manager Britt Smith said.
Subcontractor Mid-Missouri Earth Movers will handle the demolition work, a process that will possibly be completed by March 13, according to the company.
