Cole County Sheriff says jail shooting was “self-inflicted”

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Cole County Sheriff John Wheeler said Tuesday an inmate at the county jail shot himself.

Wheeler tweeted Monday a shooting at the jail sent Brandon McNeese to the hospital. Wheeler said in a tweet, he submitted charges for unlawful use of a weapon and felon in possession for McNeese.

Brandon McNeese could face new charges after a shooting inside the Cole County jail Monday.

McNeese was in the jail facing federal charges accused of selling meth. He was released from the hospital Monday and taken back into custody after the shooting.

Wheeler said investigators continue to work with Alcohol, Firearms and Tobacco and U.S. Marshal's Office to find out how the gun got inside the jail.
