COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Wednesday is the first of seven community vaccination events being held by the Columbia/Boone County Health Department.

All of the events will take place across Boone county throughout the month of October.

More information for where those events are being held is available on the county's website.

The first community event is being held in the Sturgeon Elementary cafeteria from 3:30-6 p.m.

The health department said on its website that flu vaccinations are crucial this year because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

While the vaccination will not protect one against the virus that causes COVID-19, the health department said that it will limit the overall prevalence of respiratory illness in the community.

Limiting respiratory illness in communities will in turn protect the most vulnerable populations from COVID-19.

Curbside flu shots will also be available at the health department by appointment only. Call 573-874-7355 to schedule.

The health department also began offering school-based flu clinics Sept. 22. Any parent with questions is urged to reach out to their school nurse.
