Callaway County deputy who was shot is now out of hospital

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Callaway County Sheriff’s deputy who was shot during a traffic stop two weeks ago has been released from University Hospital, the Callaway County Sheriff’s Office said on Tuesday.

Deputy Gardner Pottorff was released from MU Health Care after 15 days, the sheriff’s office wrote on its social media. He and Cpl. Justin Bax were shot on Oct. 14 in the westbound lane of Interstate 70 near mile marker 139. Bax was released from the hospital two days later after having surgery on his right arm, previous reporting indicates.

A Texas man, Jonathan Beason, was killed during an exchange of gunfire, according to an Oct. 14 press release from the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Beason had multiple felony warrants, the sheriff’s office said.

The shooting is being investigated by the MSHP Division of Drug and Crime Control. When the investigation is complete, the case file will be forwarded to the Callaway County prosecuting attorney, previous report says.
