Classes were called off in the La Plata School District on Friday after an early morning fire caused damage to the elementary school.

The fire was reported just before 5 a.m. At the school on West Moore Street. The La Plata Community Fire Protection District said on its Facebook page that the northwest corner of the north wing of the building was fully engulfed and that it fought the fire for about two hours.

No one was at the school when the fire broke out. An investigation into the cause is underway. Damage estimates were not available.

The school district posted on La Plata R-2 High School's Facebook page that district leaders are working to ensure that classes will continue on Tuesday at La Plata Baptist Church for most elementary students. The district stated in the post that bus pickup and drop off times will not be impacted, but "specific drop off procedures" will be enacted.

The district later posted that before-school care is canceled next week and drop offs begin at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. The school also stated online that its high school's winter dance was postponed.
