No injuries reported in Friday night fire on Rock Quarry Road

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

No injuries were reported after Columbia firefighters responded to a house fire in the 2800 block of Rock Quarry Road around 10:30 p.m. Friday .

Boone County Joint Communications sent a notification stating Rock Quarry Road was closed from Stadium Boulevard to Grindstone Parkway due to a structure fire.

Several firefighters were seen by an ABC 17 News reporter, as well as six Columbia firetrucks and two MU Health Care ambulances.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

According to Ryan Adams, Columbia Fire Department training and safety captain, firefighters arrived at the scene five minutes after they received the call and found a home almost completely in flames.

Adams says by the time he arrived at the scene, another firefighter surveyed the area.

"He performed a quick 360 of the structure and did note the back part of the structure was not on fire," Adams told ABC 17 News.

However, due to flames and burning debris, they were unable to use the back or front entrances and had to enter through an alternate way.

"We found very heavy working conditions in that part of the structure quickly became involved as well. So we then transferred to a defensive operation and we’ve had multiple hose lines in operation,” Adams said.

Adams said the home appeared to be vacant, with no utilities inside. No injuries were reported either. Adams said the home is more than likely a total loss.

Nearby neighbor Chris Acklin said they didn't realize the smoky, burning smell was coming from a home he passes frequently.

"Locals live right here. We did have a bonfire that we smelled of, you know, traditional air traffic on Rock Quarry. But no, the house we pass every day was the one that was involved," Acklin said.

Acklin said firefighters worked fast to extinguish the flames.

"It’s been going on for at least 45 minutes. So they’re just now wrapping it up quite quickly though,” Acklin said.

Firefighters stuck around after the fire was put out to make sure they didn't miss any burning patches of grass or smoldering debris before leaving.

However, they did return Saturday morning after our crews spotted smoke coming out of what remained of the home.

Firefighters told ABC 17 News that it was a bit of leftover smoldering from last night. They said because the fire was so intense and the amount of debris left over, they were expecting something like this to happen.

A firefighter at the scene Saturday said that when firefighters entered the home Friday night, it was filled waist-high with debris, ash, fallen wood and other burned materials.

A crew of three firefighters came to the scene and quickly put out the smoke-causing area of the building.
