Tree limb on power line causes Columbia house fire

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A falling tree limb ignited a house in south Columbia late Thursday.

The fire in the 3100 block of Crawford Drive did about $150,000 worth of damage, Columbia Fire Department Capt. Jeffrey Heidenreich said.

Firefighters were called to the house shortly before 10:30 p.m. Crews were there past midnight, Heidenreich said.

An ABC 17 News reporter saw smoke coming from a house. At least eight firetrucks were seen on the street.

"The homeowners ... made it out of the house," Capt. Joey Simmons said at the scene. "Right now, there were some animals inside. We do have one cat outside that the fire crews are providing with some oxygen. At this time, it is breathing."

Heidenreich said two cats were rescued and another remained missing Friday morning. The fire likely started when a tree limb hit the electrical service line into the house, Heidenreich said Friday. The fire appeared to be concentrated in the garage.

No one was injured.
