FULTON, Mo. (KMIZ)

Fulton fire firefighters say an elderly man has life-threatening injuries after an early morning apartment fire.

A release from the Fulton Fire Department said crews responded to a one-story duplex in the 800 block of Green Street on a report of a residential structure fire Monday.

Firefighters say crews entered the residence and found the man within minutes of arriving. He was transported to a nearby hospital.

The release said firefighters re-entered the building and extinguished the fire. Upon a second search of the residence, crews found a dead cat.

The fire department, Fulton police and the State Fire Marshal are investigating the cause of the blaze. Investigators said the fire was not suspicious as of Monday.

Crews say the fire caused about $40,000 worth of damage. The American Red Cross was called in to assist a resident in an adjoining apartment, according to the release.
