COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The University of Missouri has opened requests for a statement of qualifications from firms to help oversee the design and construction of its next nuclear research reactor.

The school put out a request for qualification on Friday to consultants to represent the school in the initial design of its NextGen nuclear research reactor. The hired consultant will help MU staff oversee the design of the new reactor.

MU initially announced its initiative for MURR in March 2023. The first 18-24 months of the project is expected to cost about $10 million, according to the RFP. It expects to hire “one or two consultants to augment MU’s staff and help oversee the design and construction of NextGen MURR,” the RFP says.

The release says that MU will contract with a separate consultant for the design. University spokesman Christopher Ave told ABC 17 News that the school expects to award the design contract sometime soon.

Electronic submissions must be received by 11 a.m. April 17 and interviews will be held May 13-14. Documents say the Board of Curators will announce the decision on July 3.

The design and initial licensing will occur through 2029, while construction will take place from 2028-32 and commissioning will be 2032-33.
