MU safety report shows increase in rape, liquor law arrests; drug arrests see significant decline

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The University of Missouri on Monday released its annual safety report and an uptick in rape reports and liquor law violations were noted.

MU and other universities are required by federal law to publish safety reports each year. The 2024 Annual Fire, Safety and Security Report showed that rape increased from 16 reports in 2022 to 18 reports in 2023.

The report states that 14 of the reported rapes occurred on campus in 2023, with 11 occurring in student housing. The report notes that two rapes reported in 2023 occurred in 2021 and 2022, while six that occurred in 2023 occurred from 2020-22.

Those numbers are still down from 2021, when 25 were reported.

Liquor law arrests saw a large increase from 208 in 2022 to 254 in 2023. Forty-six arrests in 2023 occurred in student housing, which is up from 30 the previous year.

Drug law arrests declined in 2023, with just 68 occurring. That’s down from 206 in 2022.
