UM Board of Curators approves hiring for $150 million project
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The University of Missouri Board of Curators approved a request to start hiring for a $150 million project.
In support of Mizzou Forward initiatives in New Frontiers in Science, Engineering, and Technology, over the next five years the College of Engineering and the College of Arts and Science expects to recruit up to 100 new faculty and attract a cohort of new undergraduates, graduate students, and post doctorates to support its research and education mission.
The Engineering and Applied Sciences facility will consist of approximately 125,000-150,000 square feet of wet and dry laboratory research space, support functions and services, office, and collaboration spaces.
The facility will be sited north of Lafferre Hall on Sixth Street, the former site of Parker Hall, Noyes Hall and the Old Student Health Building.
An engineering firm from St. Louis will handle the project.
Ryan Rapp, UM System executive vice president of finance and operations said this approval is only for the hiring part of the project...not the full plan.
"What we're asking for today is really the authorization to spend some money to move forward with further planning projects, approximately $150 million,” Rapp said. “We would anticipate one of the reasons we need to get moving on this as we think some of the ARPA funding that's available may apply to this project and there is a clock on funding available."
The board also approved the five year capital plan for the four universities and m-u health care.
Curators also voted to extend the test-optional undergraduate admissions pilot for the University of Missouri-Columbia, Missouri S&T and UMSL. This will make it optional for seniors graduating next year to send in their ACT and SAT test scores.
