Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt has named Columbia Public Schools in a class-action lawsuit meant to ban districts' mask mandates statewide.

CPS defended the safety measures as important to keep students and staff healthy and prevent quarantines and promised to fight the lawsuit. The debate over masks has split parents in districts across the country. Several Missouri districts have chosen mandates but most have chosen to make masks optional amid another surge in coronavirus cases.
