Columbia Board of Education to discuss attendance area changes

The Columbia Board of Education will hear recommendations on a possible change to attendance areas Monday night.

The board is working with Cooperative Strategies to collect information about attendance boundaries. According to its website, Cooperative Strategies specializes in school facility management and educational program planning.
According to the agenda, Cooperative Strategies will recommend the Phase 1 Elementary Attendance Area Boundaries for Parkade Elementary to the Board of Education.
The administration will also recommend the Board of Education approve Phase 1 for Parkade Elementary Attendance Area Boundaries.
According to Cooperative Strategies, Parkade Elementary is currently at 130% capacity and is slated to be at 142% by 2024.
Phase 1 would move roughly 2,339 K-5 students from Parkade Elementary School to Alpha Hart Lewis Elementary School.
Alpha Hart Lewis Elementary School is currently at 69% capacity.
If approved, Phase 1 would move Parkade Elementary to 92% capacity and Alpha Hart Elementary to 96% capacity.
In making the decision, the board considers time students spend on a bus and distance traveled to and from school, as well as attendance areas that follow natural/manmade boundaries and a transfer policy that allows fifth-graders to remain at their previous school and policies that allow siblings to remain.
Overall, CPS' projected student enrollment for the next school year is 19,085.

The board is expected to hear a recommendation to approve the first phase of attendance area changes at its meeting Monday night. The board meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Aslin Administration Building.
The school board is expected to make a final decision on the plan for attendance areas in June.
