Flu outbreak causes Climax Springs Schools to use AMI day on Friday

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A significant portion of the student population at a Camden County school has caused it to call off in-person classes on Friday.
The Climax Springs R-4 School District will have its fourth AMI day after about 30% of its 186 students are experiencing flu-like symptoms, a school official said on Thursday. The school district wrote on its website that maintenance staff will sanitize the building on Friday. Officials hope to hold class again on Tuesday.
“Climax Springs Schools will not be in session tomorrow January 31st due to the ongoing illness among the students and staff,” according to a message on the school’s website. “Being closed tomorrow, will give our maintenance team the chance to sanitize the building as well as allow the students and staff time to recuperate.”
The influenza report from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services for the week of Jan. 12-18 shows 3,039 cases of flu have been reported, with 95% (2,887) being influenza A. This flu season, there have been 30,373 cases reported, with 92% (27,800) being influenza A.
Area health care providers told ABC 17 News earlier this week that they were seeing increases in cases of influenza and respiratory viruses.
