COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Public school districts in Jefferson City and Columbia will not be in session Tuesday because of extreme cold.
JC Schools wrote in an email a little after 4 p.m. that the district would stay closed Tuesday because of the effects of the cold on school bus operations. School buses use diesel fuel which can thicken at cold temperatures.
Columbia Public Schools followed about 30 minutes later, citing student safety with morning wind chills expected well below zero.

"Extremely cold temperatures and negative wind chill create a dangerous situation for getting students to and from school safely, especially students walking and waiting at bus stops," CPS wrote in its message.
Southern Boone School District also called off Tuesday classes, citing the extreme cold. More than a dozen Mid-Missouri districts had called off Tuesday classes by 4 p.m. Monday. Fulton Public Schools also canceled school Tuesday.
Columbia College also stated on its social media that classes for Tuesday are canceled and the campus is closed.
Much of Mid-Missouri remained in a wind chill warning Monday. The warning is expected to expire at noon Tuesday.
Wind chills could drop as low as minus-30 degrees.
