COLUMBIA, M. (KMIZ)

The superintendent of the Hallsville School District will retire at the end of the current school year, the district said Friday.

John Downs, superintendent since 2016, will step down on June 30, 2024. He has been with the district since 1997.

Downs started teaching work in Dayton, Ohio, but moved to Hallsville after three years to become an elementary music teacher before working his way up the ranks.

Downs oversaw a period of growth in the district, including the successful passage of the first property tax levy hike for operations in 30 years. His administration also won approval for two bond issues.

The Hallsville Board of Education plans to hire a search agency to help find a replacement, the district said in a news release.
