Columbia and Jefferson City Schools closed Thursday, MU online only

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Columbia Public Schools and the Jefferson City School District will be out of class Thursday. Lincoln University will be closed and the University of Missouri will operate online only because of a winter storm expected to drop ice and snow on the area.

CPS spokeswoman Michelle Baumstark cited the storm's overnight timing in making the decision to call off classes.

JC Schools will be closed and parent teacher conferences are also canceled.

Lincoln University announced Wednesday night that in-person classes are canceled Thursday. According to an email, regularly scheduled virtual classes will be held. The campus cafeteria will also offer brunch and dinner.

The New Franklin School District based in Howard County said Wednesday afternoon that it would be closed Thursday. Howard is one of several Mid-Missouri counties including Boone that are under a winter storm warning that begins early Thursday. The ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather team has also issued a Weather Alert Day, with forecasts calling for ice and snow accumulation of up to 6 inches.

Districts in Ashland, Mexico and Boonville will also be closed.

Columbia Public Works said a 37-person plow crew will report for work at 5 a.m. Thursday. The city reminded residents that vehicles must be removed from priority routes when snowfall reaches 2 inches or facing ticketing and towing.

Williams Woods University in Fulton and Columbia College said they will operate online only Thursday.

Courts in Boone and Callaway counties are also closed Thursday because of the weather. Central Methodist University in Fayette said it would hold classes Thursday online.

The storm is expected to begin with rain, turning to sleet and freezing rain before changing over to snow overnight.
