MU family center to provide enhanced mental health support for Boone County schools

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A University of Missouri organization created by research faculty to help children and families connect with mental health and other resources will announce Friday an expansion of its services.

The Family Access Center of Excellence (FACE), will highlight the plan to enhance mental health support for about 24,000 school-aged children and their families in Boone County schools during a news conference Friday at the Boone County Government Center.

FACE is funded largely through a quarter-cent Boone County sales tax for children's services. The organization was created to connect children and families with services such as mental health care. FACE has been working for several years in Boone County, but a spokesperson said an agreement will be signed Friday to expand those services in public and private schools.

The group works to collect data not only on families and children but also culture and climate at schools.

Annual health screenings and counseling services will now be offered to 24,000 children and their families through the expanded services, according to a news release.
