ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. (KMIZ)

A former prison officer and Dent County Sheriff accused of killing two people in 2011 has been sentenced after a new sentencing phase was ordered.

Marvin Rice will serve life in prison for one count of first-degree murder.

A trial date has been set for the second count of second-degree murder.

The court set the jury trial for January 24, 2023.

The Supreme Court of Missouri ordered a new sentencing phase in the first count and a new trial in the second.

He was previously sentenced to death in 2017 for the killing of his ex-girlfriend Annette Durham and her boyfriend Steve Strotkamp.

Rice fled from authorities after the killings and was arrested in Jefferson City after a shootout at the Capitol Plaza Hotel with police.
