Drexel man found guilty after shooting at police during a failed bank robbery in Versailles
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
A Drexel man was found guilty Monday after shooting at law enforcement while trying to escape a failed bank robbery in Versailles on Nov. 30, 2017.
Jacob Monteer, 30, was found guilty of one count of bank robbery, one count of brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence, two counts of discharging a firearm during a crime of violence, and one count of being a drug user in possession of firearms.
On Nov. 30, 2017, Monteer attempted to rob the US Bank in Versailles. Monteer jumped over the teller station and opened the teller drawer but there was no money in the drawer.
Monteer drove off in a stolen truck, leading law enforcement on a high-speed pursuit.
During the chase, Monteer shot at the Stover police chief, who had set up a roadblock. Monteer then lost control of the stolen vehicle and crashed.
Monteer then tried to escape on foot but the Morgan County Sheriff tried to get him in custody. During their struggle, Monteer was able to fire a round from the sheriff’s AR-15 .223-caliber rifle before being arrested.
Monteer later told investigators that he was a drug addict and used meth on a daily basis. Officials reported finding drug paraphernalia in Monteer’s vehicle.
Monteer faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 27 years in federal prison without parole and up to a life sentence without parole.
Monteer remains in federal custody without bond.
