Man who faked his own death indicted in 2010 Columbia armed robberies

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A man who faked his own death in 2010 was indicted in Boone County on Friday for alleged armed robberies that occurred that same year.

Diego Antonio Camargo-Wasserman, 34, formerly of Columbia, is charged with two counts of first-degree robbery and one count of second-degree burglary. He is being held in federal prison after he pleaded guilty in 2024 to receiving and possessing child sex abuse materials.

He was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison on April 9, 2025, though federal online records indicate that he will be released on Aug. 18, 2027.

 Previous reporting says Camargo-Wasserman had faked his death with paperwork indicated he had died on Oct. 5, 2012, and the FBI learned five years later that he had fled to Mexico.

The indictment in the armed robbery case alleges that he robbed people on separate instances on March 8 and 9, 2010. Another instance allegedly occurred March 24, 2010, in the 2000 block of Business Loop 70. An arraignment in the case is scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11.
