A man who accidentally shot himself in a north Columbia gas station on Friday was charged with a felony on Monday.

Brandon Shelton, 30, of Columbia, was charged with stealing a gun. He is being held at the Boone County Jail on a $15,000 bond. He appeared in court on Monday by video from the jail.

According to the probable cause statement, police were called to the I-70 Eagle Stop for a report of shots fired at 7:22 p.m. for a man who said he shot himself.

Shelton allegedly told police that he was in line at the counter of the convenience store of the gas station and had a gun tucked in his waistband, the statement says.

Shelton allegedly said that he pulled up his pants and the gun went off. The bullet grazed his right knee. He went outside the gas station and threw the gun on the roof of an empty building at 416 Vandiver Drive, the statement says.

The Columbia Fire Department helped police get the gun off the roof. Police ran the serial number and found out the gun was reported stolen from Macon, the statement says. Police also found a gun magazine in one of his jacket pockets, the statement says.

He also had a failure-to-appear warrant. Police at the scene had told ABC 17 News that Shelton's injuries were "very minor."
