COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A man was accused “jackpotting” a Sedalia ATM machine in January to steal more than $69,000.

Winston Flores-Duran was charged on Wednesday in Pettis County with stealing more than $25,000 and tampering with computer data to defraud. A warrant was issued and a court date has not been scheduled.

Police were called on Jan. 27 in reference to an ATM theft in Sedalia, according to the probable cause statement. Video allegedly showed three people open an ATM on Jan. 25 and used an external hard drive to upload malware, which caused the ATM to dispense all of its money, totaling $69,340, the statement says. The practice is known as “jackpotting,” court documents say.

The video then showed a blue 2002 Mercury minivan that was allegedly pulled over later that day by police, the statement says. All three people were seen on police bodycam and alleged they didn’t speak English, court documents say. The driver wrote down his name as “Wiston Flores” and his birthdate, the statement says. Police let the vehicle go before it was known it was involved in the theft, the statement says.

Flock cameras were used to determine the vehicle was in Denver, but it had a different driver who told Denver police that they bought the vehicle at a convenience store parking lot.

More surveillance video was found by police, which allegedly showed the van meet a white car and the driver had changed before that meeting, the statement says.

Police wrote that the department began working with the Secret Service, who claimed 450 law enforcement officers were working “jackpotting” cases nationwide. Court documents say the USSS found a booking photo of the driver from the traffic stop: Flores-Duran. The birthdate matched the birthdate that was given at the traffic stop, the statement says.
