A man was charged with several felonies related to a string of car break-ins that occurred in north Columbia at the end of December.

Carter Gathercole, 18, of Columbia, was charged with three counts of stealing a gun, one count of stealing a vehicle and resisting arrest. He is being held at the Boone County Jail on a $75,000 bond. An initial court appearance was held on Thursday afternoon.

According to the probable cause statement, users of the Ring Neighborhood app posted video of video break-ins occurring on Dec. 25 and 26. Video was also shared on Facebook on Dec. 27 that showed two people allegedly seen in the previous videos, with some identifiers being a facemask and dark-colored Crocs. A Crimestoppers tip was called in on Dec. 27 that identified Gathercole, the statement says.

Police took a report about a stolen blue 2007 Chevrolet Silverado on Dec. 30, the statement says. The next day, police responded to a report that two guns were stolen from another vehicle. That theft allegedly occurred south of Barberry Avenue, the statement says. Police reviewed video footage that showed two men, the statement says.

Later on Dec. 31, police say they found the stolen truck near the intersection of Sunflower Street and Primrose Drive, which is near Barberry Avenue. Police chased the truck until the driver reached a dead end, and he and another person got out of the vehicle and ran away, according to court documents.

Police eventually found the Crocs and other clothing seen in the videos, as well as a backpack that contained Gathercole’s birth certificate, Social Security card, temporary driver’s license and medical documents, the statement says. Police found a stolen gun in the backpack, and two more stolen guns in the vehicle, the statement says.

Gathercole was arrested at a residence on Wednesday and more guns were found, court documents say.
