Assault charges filed in Columbia shooting that closed part of Providence Road

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A man accused in a shooting that led to the shutdown of a busy Columbia road Monday morning has been charged with assault.

Jared Britt Jr., 19, of Columbia was charged Tuesday with first-degree assault. Another man, Ataveon Gordon, 18, of Columbia, was charged with first-degree assault and aiding and abetting a person shooting a gun from a car.

Police were called to North Providence Road and Nebraska Avenue a little before 10 a.m. Monday and found a silvery Chevrolet Malibu with bullet holes in the back and no back glass, according to a probable cause statement.

The Columbia Police Department said officers found a man who had been shot. An ambulance took him to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Police later said the man was shot on Mayflower Drive in west Columbia but gave no details about how he was shot.

A witness told police that she and the victim had just switched seats in the vehicle near Valleyview Drive when a black car pulled up behind them and two men with hoodies and masks got out to rob them, according to a statement. The woman told officers one of the men was Britt.

The witness said the men shot at her vehicle when she and the victim were driving away, with the gunman hanging out the rear driver's side window of the black car. They then drove toward a hospital. The shooting victim said during the drive that Britt was the shooter, the statement says.

Officers found several .45-caliber shell casings in the area where the shooting took place.
