Busy Columbia road shut down after man shot
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A shooting shut down part of one of Columbia's busiest roads Monday morning.
A Columbia Police Department spokesperson said a man was taken by ambulance to a hospital after the shooting that closed Providence Road from Business Loop 70 to Interstate 70. More than a dozen first responder units were sent to the scene.
"We were just there at the break time and we just heard a shot and it was a tire screeching and then the car was parked and then a whole bunch of people just got out and just started freaking out," witness at the Break Time near where the street shut down Jamison Kraus said. "It was just a crazy experience, honestly, it's just surprising that it happened so early in the morning."
CPD later posted on Facebook that the man had been shot in the 2600 block of Mayflower Drive in west Columbia. His injuries were not life-threatening.
Police were sent to the shooting call a little before 10 a.m. Emergency dispatchers sent out a public alert that the road had been shut down.
Crime scene tape was up blocking off much of Providence Road but was taken down before 11 a.m.
Nearby Hickman High School was under a "hold and secure" briefly, meaning students and staff were not allowed outside of the building.
"This is part of an active and ongoing investigation. If anybody has information regarding this incident, they're asked to call," CPD's Public Information Specialist Sarah Yoro-Massad said.
