Police investigate homicide at Fulton State Hospital

A patient at Fulton State Hospital died following an incident that occurred with another patient on Monday, a Missouri Department of Mental Health spokesperson wrote in an email.

Fulton Police Chief Bill Ladwig wrote in an email to ABC 17 News that the incident is being investigated as a homicide. Police referred to the incident as an assault in a statement.

The identity of either patient was not revealed.

“On Monday, January 6, an incident occurred between two patients at Fulton State Hospital.  One patient was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, from which he later died. The Fulton Police Department is investigating the incident,” a Department of Mental Health statement provided by spokeswoman Debra Walker. reads. “The Department of Mental Health and Fulton State Hospital leadership are deeply saddened by the incident.  Grief and trauma support are being offered to the deceased patient’s family as well as to other patients and Fulton State Hospital staff members. “

Ladwig wrote that more information would be released later.

"On January 7, 2025, Fulton Police were advised of an assault at the Fulton State Hospital involving two patients," Fulton police said in a Thursday social media post. "The Fulton police Department is currently conducting a homicide investigation due to this incident and further details will be released on Friday, January 10, 2025. There will be no further information released until then. There is no threat to the public."
