Man arrested in connection with Downtown Columbia shooting, charged for chase on I-70

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Columbia police say they arrested a man on Thursday in connection with a Nov. 10 shooting in the 900 block of East Broadway in Downtown Columbia.

Demetrius L. Shaw, 23, of Columbia, is being held at the Boone County Jail without bond. Charges have not been filed yet in the shooting case, though police say he was arrested on suspicion of illegal gun possession. However, Shaw was charged on Thursday in connection to a chase on Nov. 25 that ended in a crash on Interstate 70 near the Midway exit.

Shaw was charged with aggravated fleeing, drug possession, illegal gun possession, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon and misdemeanor stealing. A court date for those charges have not been scheduled.

On Nov. 10, police responded around 2:45 a.m. to the 900 block of East Broadway for a report of a shooting and found a man and a woman with gunshot wounds, the release says. Both people were brought to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, previous reporting indicates. Another man was also shot and was treated at a hospital. All victims are now stable, the release says.

An ABC 17 News reporter at the scene saw 14 evidence markers.

Deandre Denny, 28, was also charged in the shooting with first-degree assault, armed criminal action and illegal gun possession. He’s being held by the Missouri Department of Corrections. A court appearance is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 13.

Court documents in previous reporting say surveillance videos from nearby businesses showed a gunfight between Denny and another man. Denny was shot in his legs and foot -- detectives helped identify him by seeing one of the gunmen limp as he ran away in surveillance video, the statement says.

Chase and crash

According to the probable cause statement for the crash on Nov. 25, a black Kia Optima was traveling around 86 miles per hour while heading eastbound on Interstate 70 and law enforcement attempted a traffic stop.

The Kia was traveling more than 130 miles per hour and collided with a guard rail near the Midway exit after trying to drive between two tractor-trailers, the statement says. After crashing, Shaw ran into the woods, court documents say. A passenger in the car claimed they did not know Shaw, the statement says. The passenger was treated for minor injuries, previous reporting indicates.

Boone County deputies searched the vehicle and found two cellphones, one of which had a photo of Shaw as its background, the statement says. Deputies were able to identify Shaw from previous interactions, the statement says

Deputies also found crack cocaine, marijuana, a gun, stolen license plates and a wallet that included Shaw’s Social Security card and pieces of mail addressed to Shaw, court documents say.
