Morgan County couple accused of performing at-home circumcision on child
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A Morgan County couple have been charged after they allegedly performed a circumcision on a child at their home.
Tyler Wade Gibson was charged with child abuse and performing an unauthorized surgery. An arraignment is scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Morgan County Courthouse. Bailey Alexus Gibson was charged with child abuse and an arraignment was set for 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28.
According to the probable cause statement, dispatch received a call from the Department of Social Services on Thanksgiving Day claiming that the department received an emergency hotline call from University Hospital about a child who had undergone an at-home circumcision.
“The procedure did not go as planned,” court documents say and the child was brought to Lake Regional Hospital the night of Nov. 27 before being brought to University Hospital. The Gibsons “left the hospital against medical advice,” court documents say.
Deputies spoke with the couple at their home and put them under arrest. Tyler Gibson allegedly told deputies that he performed the procedure with a “utility tool,” the statement says. Gibson is not medically trained, but claimed he “conducted research and prayed a blessing,” the statement says.
He allegedly told deputies that he was not prepared for the amount of bleeding that occurred, so they took the child to a hospital. The couple was at the hospital for more than four hours and left “because they grew tired of waiting,” the statement says.
Bailey Gibson allegedly told deputies that she assisted Tyler Gibson.
The couple was not on the Morgan County Jail roster on Monday afternoon.
